I TASTE LIKE SOCKS! :DI have a powerful love of food. I have a feeling that the perfect job for me would be critiquing any fine dining establishment. I love salads, meat, candy, cake, everything. I’ll try everything at least once, including some of the nastiest things imaginable. I tried those gross ‘mixed fruit’ twizzlers. Now and then I’ll try something bizarre and find a gem, like those oh-so-delicious caramel bugles. You’re probably asking yourself, “What does this have to do with gaming?” Good question, dear reader. Well, as avid a food fan as I am, whenever I come across a particularly strange food(ish) item in a game, I tend to wonder just what - exactly - it tastes like. Some of them just look so good.

I’ve compiled a short list of the game foods I’d love to try. It took more consideration than I thought it would, but I had to leave out a lot of the games that just use regular real life food items. Not that I have anything against cake…it’s just that I’m sure we’ve all eaten it at least once by now.

10 ) Savory Deviate Delights - These World of Warcraft based treats have me wondering about their taste every time my character chomps down. They’re made from fish, so I can’t imagine that it would be too appetizing. At the same time, though, it’s an entirely different fantasy world. These fish could taste like cherries for all I know.

The magic of these culinary creations is that they turn your character into a variety of different creatures or races. I can just imagine myself getting my hands on a bag of them and obliviously eating away while nearby bystanders gawked. Yeeeah. Maybe it’d be better if I never got to try these. Especially since I tend to get addicted to the really delicious stuff.

9 ) Ether - No, I don’t mean the chemical! I’m talking about the mana-restoring liquid from the Final Fantasy series. Obviously I don’t have mana so I have no idea what it actually feels like to have it restored. I imagine that sensation coupled with the taste is what intrigues me so much about this drink. People have tried to recreate potions and whatnot as a type of gamer food with varied results. But that’s not good enough for me! I want the real deal!

I can imagine how useful having something like this for tests would be. Brain fried? Drink up some ether! Just make sure it’s the right kind!!

8 ) Blue Potions - In a similar vein with Ether, the blue potions from the Legend of Zelda series pique my curiosity. They restore mana and health. They’re like the ultimate energy drink. Forget Red Bulls, I want a blue potion.

The downside is that considering how they’re made, it would be impossible to mass produce them. That means only the most wealthy would be able to savor the magic. I’m sure the price would be at least $500. And before you argue or point out that nobody would buy something like a drink at that price, let me point out that people regularly drop $1000 on a “Grand Opulence” sundae in NYC.

7 ) Pacman’s Weird Yellow Blips - I don’t even know what they’re properly called, but they look awfully tasty to me. The way pacman wolfs them down makes me wonder if they’re like delicious little M&Ms. Oh how I long to try them. But I bet they’re like potato chips. You can’t have just one.

I’d probably make the same sound effect while eating them, too. “Oh YES! A new pack of Pacman Blips! WAKKA WAKKA WAKKA!”

6 ) 1-Up Mushrooms - I barely even have one life at this point. I can’t imagine having to take care of another one. But I do wonder how these godlike fungi taste. Think about it. They transcend physics and spirituality and grant the imbiber practical immortality. How awesome is that?

Though I bet they have a bad side. They probably taste like relish and old socks. Hm.

Next week I’ll round out my list. Feel free to leave suggestions about the game foods you love. Or even leave recipes for game-related foods you’ve found over the years. I’m always up for cooking and trying new stuff. Especially if it’s delicious.

I bet I could make most of that stuff, and it’ll taste pretty good cept the 1-up cause it would be a living mushroom.

As a lover of Sea Food, and fish in general, I can only hope the Deviate Delight is true to its’ title: Savoury. :-)

I’d like to try Nuka-Cola from the Fallouts, but I’d hope I wouldn’t get radiation sickness from it. Also, I wonder if Lon Lon milk would taste any different or better than real life milk. ;)

    #7 cracked me up.

I definitely agree about the mushrooms and deviate fish! Although, stormchops (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33866) would be kind of fun, too.

I gotta say, maybe I’m going off topic here, but what happens to things that Kirby eats? Does Waddle Doo taste significantly different than Waddle Dee? Inquiring minds want to know.

I did come across this the other day http://www.taurenchef.com/ :) Personally I want to try the Roasted Clefthoof, possibly only because I spent so long killing them and cooking this up in tbc ^^
