Interesting, some of these I hadn't seen before, or are different versions, it's cool to see. For FFXII I got the collector's edition, which was in a pretty cool tin with a similar cover, but more golden and darker, I actually really liked it compared to say, the FFX-2 cover here in the US. I'd put an image but I'm not sure if HTML works in these...a google search will yield it. And I love SH2, both kinds of covers, so I'm all over that decision ;)

What you'll find is that some of the PAL boxart is different and more often than not better than the American counterparts. I think that the PAL Resident Evil 4 cover is one of my favourites in this case.Generally we get better box art, maybe some tweaks and content additions because the localization (into 4/5 languages) takes such a long time that developers just tweak the game a little which can include the boxart.

I think that some of your choices are based on artwork and not good boxart design. For example I also love the Metal Gear Solid artwork but I think that the Oblivion boxart is much better. The Ico cover is lovely as well.

In terms of minimalist cover designs, one of the most striking for me has always been Quarantine for the PC. The game was a clockwork city type game that had the player driving around in an annoyingly skittish hover taxi. Much of the game play consisted of running over pedestrians (whether on purpose or not) and firing increasingly powerful weapons attached to the cab. But instead of reflecting this violence with huge Michael Bay sized explosions on the box art, the designers instead simply showed a windshield wiper cutting through a field of red with a tiny little droplet coming from the top of the swathe elegantly insinuating a massive amount of blood. You can see an image of it over at MobyGames: http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/quarantine/cover-art/gameCoverId,5133/

The US and PAL covers for Shadow of the Colossus are goregous. If pressed i'd say I prefer the PAL one and the special edition came with some really nice art cards.
